CENTERVILLE – A week-long celebration is happening in Centerville.

The 111th annual Centerville Old Home Week kicked off over the weekend and runs through Sunday, August 9.

Former President of the Centerville Civic Association Meg Loughran says Saturday night’s bonfire at Craigville Beach is the highlight of the Old Home Week.

“It’s just a wonderful opportunity for people to come and set up their beach chairs and bring a picnic,” she said. “The fire department comes and does foam for the kids and they run around and it culminates with a big bonfire on the beach.”

Loughran said Old Home Week has grown into something popular.

“It’s just become an event that people in the village, throughout the whole town and even people from out-of-state really look forward to and mark on their calendars,” she said. “I’ve heard stories that people from out-of-state will call hotels they’ve stayed in in Centerville well in advance of the summer to find out when Old Home Week is because that is when they want to book their vacation.”

Other popular events throughout the week include the Lobster Roll Dinner on Friday night at the South Congregational Church from 5 to 7 p.m. along with the annual ice cream social at the Centerville Library at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Centerville Civic Association will hold its summer annual meeting tonight as part of the festivities. The meeting will feature strawberry shortcake with Four Seas ice cream. It takes place at the South Congregational Church at 7 p.m.
