Cetacean Society Looking for Boats for Marine-Mammal Research

KA_Hyannis_Marina Boats Docked11_11315HYANNIS – A research organization is looking for boaters on the Cape and Islands to offer their vessel for marine-mammal research.

Since study grants are harder to secure at this time, Cetacean Society International are asking boat owners to offer their vessel as a research platform.

“Scientists might be able to use somebody’s boat, they would be able to go out to someplace they have in mind, the person that owns the boat would drive it, and would take a few people and their equipment, and would perhaps go out and look at gray seals or they would be doing stuff with dolphins or whales off the coast,” said Bill Rossiter with the Society.

Advantages of donating a boat for research include learning about whales from experts, a tax deduction and the opportunity to approach whales under scientific permits.

“There is an opportunity for the scientist to actually take the boat and go where they need to go, and that is somewhat limited, it would not be a dangerous thing, it would not be too far off shore” said Rossiter.

For more information, contact the organization at csiwhalesalive.org or 203-770-8615.

Those interested are asked to indicate what type of boat they have, when and where the boat will be available, for how long and the number of people the boat can accommodate.
