CENTERVILLE – Following Monday’s news that Boston is no longer in the running to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, the head of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce said she is disappointed.

“Having the ilk of visitors that would attend an Olympic game would have been great business,” Chamber CEO Wendy Northcross said. “It would have left behind some much-needed infrastructure improvements.”

The U.S. Olympic Committee made the decision after Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said he would not sign the host city contract if taxpayers had to foot any cost overruns.

But even though she said it’s understandable that some were concerned about the financial ramifications, Northcross cited London as an example of a city that was improved on the international stage for having hosted the games.

“The Olympics brought that extra spark and customer service, which is really what I was hoping for Boston and of course the spinoff-business that Cape Cod could achieve,” she said.

Olympic sailing events would have been held out of New Bedford, on Buzzards Bay.
