Annual Pops By the Sea Concert Set for Sunday in Hyannis

HYANNIS – The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will host its popular Pops by the Sea concert on Sunday.

Every year the organization looks for ways it can improve the event to ensure an enjoyable experience for all who attend, and this year is no different.

Due to changes in Barnstable town policy, ticket holders are no longer allowed to bring outside alcohol to the event.

Anyone who attempts to bring alcohol through the gate may either bring it back to their vehicle and rejoin the line or surrender it to security by immediately pouring it into a trash container.

“There is a no outside alcohol policy to the Pops by the Sea this year due to town changes in public drinking and liquor liability,” said Arts Foundation Executive Director Julie Wake.

“We want to make sure people understand that the policy is a hard fast rule that we cannot allow it due to the changes in the town law and we just hope that people will be patient and understand that we’re trying to do our best.”

Alcohol will now be available for purchase from vendors on the village green for those 21 and older.

This year’s beverage sponsors include Hog Island Beer, Wachusett beer, and Nauti Hard Seltzer.

“We will have concessions throughout the green so that you can purchase a glass of wine, you can buy some Wachusett beer or Hog Island Beer, as well as some Nauti Hard Seltzer,” said Wake.

This year’s wine sponsor, Josh Cellars, will have a tasting room that is a replica of founder Joseph Carr’s father’s garage.

Carr named his wine as a tribute to his father, whose nickname was Josh.

Outside food will be allowed in, but coolers and other items entering concert grounds will be subject to search.

Chatham-based eatery Mom & Pops Burgers will have a food truck on-site.

Other concession vendors include, John’s Foot-long Hot Dogs, Del’s Lemonade, Smith Family Popcorn, and Ben and Jerry’s.

Shirts designed by Tim Convery, owner of Tim-Scapes in Provincetown, will also be for sale at the event.

Local band Funktapuss will once again perform at the concert as part of the pre-show festivities.

The theme for this year’s Pops is the Summer of’69, which will evoke nostalgia among attendees with music from the Beatles’ last album “Abbey Road,” and The Who’s double album “Tommy,” as well as from several films that were released that year including “Hello, Dolly!” and “Goodbye, Mr. Chips.”

“We’re looking back on the year 1969, which was a huge watershed for all sorts of things politically, socially, and musically,” Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart said.

“Woodstock, that little festival, happened 50 years ago, and then there was the breakup of the Beatles.”

Lockhart also highlighted this year’s guest conductor, TV actor and Broadway star Erich Bergen, who will pull off a first for the Pops by also serving as the guest performer.

“It’s always great to be down there on the Hyannis Village Green,” Lockhart continued.

“In a way, it’s one of the most traditional settings for the summer with thousands of people in the audience. It’s really a great community atmosphere.”

Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea is set to take place this Sunday, August 11th on the Hyannis Village Green.

Gates open at 1 p.m. with festivities kicking off an hour later.

Master of Ceremonies DJ Ian Lee will join Funktapuss on the side stage as part of the pre-show from 2 to 4 p.m.

The main concert begins at 5 p.m.
