Changes On The Way For Wampanoag Charter School Proposal

sack lunch schoolMASHPEE – Project leaders for the Wopanaak language charter school are redoubling their efforts to launch a charter school on Cape Cod focused on the native language of the Wampanoag Tribe.

State officials turned down the proposal last year, but project leaders are working on tweaking the plan in hopes of having it accepted this year.

“We’ll be preparing some charts that show how the areas of instruction that we’re developing based around Wopanaak culture directly relate to state standards for math instruction, social studies, etc.” said Charter Developer Jennifer Weston.

Weston said the tweaks they’re considering include reducing the percentage of instruction taught in the native tongue and expanding the school through eighth grade.

“One recommendation that we received is that we be more inclusive in our outreach and encourage non-Wampanoag families to learn about the educational opportunities that we’d like to offer,” Weston said.

Project leaders plan to hold a series of information meetings on their proposal, with the first set for March 26 at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Center on Great Neck Road South in Mashpee from 5 to 7 pm.
