CHATHAM – Lighthouse Beach in Chatham was closed for swimming Sunday afternoon following a sighting of a great white shark.

According to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s shark-tracking application, Sharktivity, the closure was due to a seal predation.

Chatham Harbor Master Stuart Smith said he received a call about the situation not long after 1 p.m., at which point he sent a few boats out to monitor the shark.

As of 5 p.m., the shark had not been seen in hours, and the continued closure to swimmers was continued as a precaution, he said.

Smith said he expects to reopen the beach to swimmers Monday morning, barring any more shark sightings.
