Chatham Officials Consider Site for New Senior Center

CHATHAM – Officials in Chatham continue to debate potential sites for the town’s new senior center.

Discussions are underway over four prospective locations including the current site on Stony Hill Road and properties off of Middle Road, one near Volunteer Park, and another site adjacent to the town’s community center.

Town officials have long advocated for replacing the existing cramped and outdated space with a new larger and more efficient facility.

Project architect Joel Bargmann updated selectmen last week on their options for the new senior center, which would likely be up to 14,000 square feet and require up to 80 new parking spaces.

“We are doing a test to see how a building and a number of parking spaces could fit on these particular sites,” he explained, “It’s not a definitive design, it’s really to see if the site is big enough and what the opportunities are.”

While the current site of the center is considered too small to house the new facility, the other locations have their own problems too.

Residents and selectmen have expressed concern over any plan which would affect the town’s Little League Field behind the Community Center, and the town-owned Middle Road property is currently designated as conservation space.

Selectmen will revisit the discussion at a meeting on the proposals scheduled for November 26th.
