Chatham Officials Suspend Parking Fees at Cockle Beach Due to Erosion

CHATHAM-  The $20 parking fee at Cockle Beach in Chatham has been temporarily waived for all residents and visitors, due to severe erosion in, and around the area.

Recent storms and natural occurrences have left a majority of the beach washed up to the shore grass, leaving it extremely difficult for motor vehicles to gain access into the parking lot.

This issue is forcing local officials to take swift action to try and save the area through dredging and other measures.

“Immediate remedies will be made to truck some sand in there to at least protect the existing infrastructure, and keep a somewhat pedestrian capable access,” said Dan Tobin, Parks and Recreation for Chatham.

Cockle Cove is not the only location in the town that is facing problems, with over $450,000 being split between Cockle and Harding’s Beach. Issues around the area] are very real,” says Tobin.

Town officials have also decided to remove lifeguard services from the area temporarily until a plan can be fully formulated to strengthen the shoreline.

It’s been nearly three years since the beach received a significant amount of sand and the town wants to create an additional buffer between Nantucket Sound and the beach parking lot.
