CHATHAM – Chatham officials have unveiled a new master plan designed to make life safer and more convenient for local bicyclists.
The $3.4 million plan , developed in partnership with the Cape Cod Commission, features dozens of potential projects from improved signage to the addition of new bike-only lanes on local roadways.
The plan calls for expanding bike access to key areas of Chatham including local beaches and shopping areas with clear signs and roadway markings, as well as curbing and crossways.
“Over the past few years, in Massachusetts and on the Cape, there has been a really substantial increase in the interest in bicycling and participation in bicycling,” said Bikeway Committee Chairman John O’Toole.
“The number of bicyclists in Chatham was noticeably higher than in previous seasons.”
Transportation planners advise that the projects be put in place over the next five years.
$10,000 is available in the town’s fiscal year 2019 budget for bikeway improvements.
