Chatham Residents Protest Monomoy Plan

DunesCHATHAM – Residents in Chatham are beginning to organize their opposition to the Monomoy Regional Wildlife Refuge Draft Management Plan.

The plan calls for the town to cede over 700 acres of beach land to the Federal Government.

Town meeting voted overwhelmingly against the plan a few weeks ago.

Chatham Selectman Sean Summers, an opponent of the plan, will be on a newly-formed seven-person committee to try and work towards a solution.

The committee is being hastily formed, Summers said, because the state has given the town only 30 days to respond to the plan.

Summers said the first step is to secure an extension to the 30-day deadline.

The town will be working with elected officials at both the state and Federal level to try and secure that extension.
