CHATHAM – Inspired by the area’s popularity over the summer, officials in Chatham are considering what to do with the Bridge Street waterfront site near the newly-reconstructed Mitchell River Bridge.
Director of Natural Resources Bob Duncanson said that he has gone back to the original contractor for the assessment study selected last December after the town acquired the property.
An additional $75,000 was approved at last year’s funding appropriation in the event that additional engineering and permitting projects were needed for the Bridge site.
He said that the town will now use part of that money for an assessment of the property.
“There was some discussion about things such as moving the shellfish upwelling facility there, potentially the Coast Guard moving their rescue boats to that location, parking, and other forms of public access,” Duncanson said.
Selectman Dean Nicastro pitched the idea for a viewing platform.
Duncanson said a consultant will soon begin trawling town committees and residents for their opinion.
Funding for any project ideas could be partially funded by a grant, such as the Seaport Economic Council, he said.
