CHATHAM – Chatham continues working onvefforts to remove industrial pollutants such as PFAS from the town’s drinking water supply.
Public Works Director Tom Temple spoke with the select board recently about their progress.
“The water division continues to work with MASS DEP collecting PFAS samples,” said Temple.
“We took samples today and will have our next sampling on October 19. The town’s drinking water supply is safe to drink in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, it meets industry standards, EPA of Mass DEP standards.”
In September, the town took several wells offline and banned outdoor watering due to detected PFAS levels above maximum limits and drought conditions.
Temple said plans were moving on schedule to treat well 4.
Two GAC filters are being installed to filter pollutants from the affected wells while the town builds a more permanent facility.
Wells are currently running for 12-15 hours per day, within industry standards of sixteen hours or less.
In recent weeks wells were running for as much as 18-19 hours a day.
“Our goal is to get as many of these wells up and running as we can, so that we’re pulling off the different wells and we’re not running them out of whack,” said Temple.
“We’re trying to float between them and give them rest in between. That’s what our ultimate goal is, to just keep moving through and hopefully get our other wells back online.”
