Chatham Selectmen Fill Eldredge Property Planning Committee

CHATHAM – Selectmen in Chatham recently named the seven residents who will serve on the Eldredge Garage Property Planning Committee.

The committee will examine the possible uses for the property which was purchased this summer for $2.5 million after being approved overwhelmingly at Town Meeting in January.

Appointees are Chatham Clothing Bar owner Sandy Wycoff; Chatham Jewelers’ Scott Hamiliton; Brad Schiff, the former chairman of the Independence Day Parade; resident John Kaar; Frank Messina, the historical commission chairman; Winnie Lear, an Old Village resident; and the executive director of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce Lisa Franz.

Selectman Cory Metters encourages applicants not chosen to continue to assist in the process.

“We’re going to need as much input on this property project as possible because it’s a clean slate,” Metters said.

Metters said the town needs to gather input from all residents.

The nine-member committee will also include Selectmen Dean Nicastro and Shareen Davis.

The land will most likely be used for parking and open space conservation with discussions to also include workforce housing and recreational opportunities.

It also provides the town an opportunity to create workforce housing or other recreational uses.

A group of citizens and businesses facilitated the deal for the town to purchase the land from the Eldredge family.

Environmental testing on the site was conducted during the winter as the property once housed a gas and service station.

A barn on the property was torn down earlier this year, which was a condition of the purchase by the town.
