Chatham Selectmen Hear Presentation on Cape Housing Initiative

CHATHAM – A representative from Community Development Partnership (CDP) discussed their new program with Chatham Selectmen Tuesday night.

The initiative is a community-based strategy to increase the region’s affordable housing stock.

The Cape Housing Institute is a six-week training for elected and appointed municipal leaders and town staff.

The curriculum includes topics such as zoning and site selection, financing and development and planning and needs assessment.

“We’ll look at what’s the state of zoning in your town currently, what type of housing stock is missing, and what are the zoning options available to you to diversify the housing types in your town,” said Andrea Aldana with CDP.

Through the training, municipal officials and staff would be supported with the knowledge and skills to support the creation of more affordable housing.

The Institute is scheduled to begin the week of October 11 and each session will be held in the Upper, Mid, Lower and Outer Cape.

“We’ll look toward the future, we’ll talk about regionalism, how can towns work together to regional approaches to common problems and how have other towns in Massachusetts already successfully done this,” said Aldana.

The program runs until November 16th.

The Cape Community Housing Partnership collaborated with Mass Housing Partnership to develop the curriculum.
