Ryder’s Cove in Chatham
CHATHAM – Selectmen in Chatham are backing a plan to make improvements to the Ryder’s Cove town landing.
The $1.6 million proposal would repair the failing bulkhead, install new floats and replace the aging boat ramp, which is falling apart.
Coastal Resources Manager Ted Keon said the improvements are necessary at the small, but popular spot.
“During the summer season a very high percentage of recreational boaters use this to launch to get to Pleasant Bay, Chatham Harbor and the Atlantic,” Keon said. “It’s really the premiere site to get to the east side of Chatham.”
Keon said it gets even busier during bass season.
“When the bass have been out front we have become the place to go during commercial bass season and it becomes, I don’t want to say a ‘mad house,’ but it’s close to that,” he said.
Selectmen unanimously voted to support the preliminary design and permitting for the project, which are expected to cost about $30,000 and take up to a year to complete.
The proposal also includes trail upgrades at the Marconi triangle adjacent to the cove.
Selectmen said the scale of the project could be reduced due to the ability to get permits and increased costs that could arise from plans changing.
