Chatham Selectmen Vote to Institute Paid Parking at Eldredge Garage Property

CHATHAM – The Eldredge Garage Property in Chatham will be open for parking during the summer season, but it won’t be free for visitors.

Selectmen recently voted unanimously to allow parking on the recommendation of the property’s planning committee, but not charge residents or taxpayers.

“A short-term plan for the summer might be a good way to test the waters on the use of the property,” said Selectman Shereen Davis.

Selectman Dean Nicastro agreed that instituting paid parking would be a good test opportunity for the town.

“I certainly would urge the board to consider continuing paid parking this summer, because otherwise if you have a summer without paid parking and want to institute it down the line it’s going to be even more difficult,” Nicastro said.

The town purchased the Eldredge Garage property for $2.5 million after a town meeting vote last year.

An implementation plan for paid parking will be developed.
