Chatham Selectmen Vote to Proceed with Eldredge Property Purchase

CHATHAM – Selectmen in Chatham voted to move forward with the purchase of the former Eldredge Garage Property on Main Street earlier this month.

The vote occurred during a closed door session August 15.

In January, $2.5 million for the purchase overwhelmingly passed at Special Town Meeting 277-26.

The land will most likely be used as a parking lot with restrooms and open space conservation.

“The next step is to post it and advertise it for 30 days,” said Jill Goldsmith, Chatham’s Town Manager. “It notes from whom we are purchasing the property from, the amount and other details. And then after the 30 day period the board would authorize me, as the town manager, to execute the purchase and sale agreement.”

The $2.5 million purchase and sale agreement can be found online here.

The parcel covers 1.4 acres of land in the busy downtown area on Route 28. The land also provides the town an opportunity to create workforce housing or other recreational uses.

A group of citizens and businesses facilitated the deal for the town to purchase the land from the Eldredge family.

Environmental testing on the site was conducted during the winter as the property once housed a gas and service station.

A barn on the property was torn down earlier this year, which was a condition of the purchase by the town.
