Chatham Voters Head to Town Meeting Monday

CHATHAM – Chatham voters head to town meeting Monday to consider a number of items, including affordable housing efforts, a ban on retail marijuana, and a prohibition on balloons.

Residents will also decide on a number of spending measures, including beach renourishment and improvements to town facilities.

After the harsh winter, Chatham is looking to place new sand down at Cockle Cove Beach and Harding Beach to protect the areas from future storms. The price tag for the projects is $450,000.

The town will ask residents to okay $100,000 for a study looking into a new senior center.

Voters will also consider $483,000 in upgrades to the Eldredge Public Library.

Chatham residents voted against legalizing marijuana in 2016 and could join other Cape towns in choosing to ban retail stores in their town. Monday’s vote will determine whether recreational shops and manufacturing will be allowed in Chatham.

Voters will decide whether to ban the sale or release of balloons, except those used for research purposes. Proponents of the bylaw say gas-filled galloons can hurt or kill marine life.

The town is also looking for permission to ask the state legislature to use half of the money raised from the annual 3 percent Land Bank tax to pay down some of the town’s $16.8 million liability for post-employment benefits for municipal employees.

Town meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Monomoy Regional Middle School.
