CHATHAM –  A piece of history along the Chatham waterfront will be preserved as a working pier following a vote by town meeting voters Monday night.

They overwhelmingly approved spending $1.5 million to buy the Eldredge Pier at Stage Harbor.

The Eldredge family has owned the facility for 6 decades and was looking to make sure the local fishing industry had continued access to the area.

Chatham voters also approved a $29 million operating budget for the next fiscal year, money for pier repairs and changes to zoning along Route 28.

A $3.5 million article to purchase equipment for manganese and iron treatment for Chatham’s water wells.
