WEST YARMOUTH – Maplewood Senior Living’s Mill Hill Residence hosted a ceremony Tuesday night to present checks to three local dementia organizations.
Executive Director Rachel Greenfield presented funds to three that deal with Alzheimer’s. “The Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Family Support Center, as well as Hope and Dementia Services. We’re overjoyed with the response and we’re so pleased to donate the money that we did collect,” se said.
Each of the three received $650.
Lots of families struggle financially to take care of a member struggling with the disease. The organizations depend on donations and fundraisers, particularly when many services are provided free.
Greenfield is quick to point out how important they are. “When people do have the diagnosis, these organizations offer hope and counselling, and it’s so needed. These people who are part of these non-profits are amazing and they do a wonderful job. We’ll do anything we can to support them,” she said.
It is estimated that the 15 million people who provide unpaid care for patients with Alzheimer’s and other dementia are providing a value of $230 billion in services.
Since 2000, the number of people with Alzheimer’s has increased by 89%, with someone in the U.S. developing the disease every 66 seconds.
