EAST FALMOUTH – In a sport usually dominated by men, a group of women will be entertaining visitors all week long at the Barnstable County Fair.

Timber Tina’s World Champion Lumberjills are the first and original all-female group of logging sports entertainers.

Tina Scheer, 54, founded the group which travels all around the world performing at fairs, festivials, private functions and corporate events.

The group, which are known as Chics with Axes, began in 1995 and are now in their 19th season out of Trenton, Maine.

“We compete in what we call the Olympics of the 4S,” Scheer said. “We do hot sawing, which are the big supped up chainsaws, ax throwing, crosscut sawing, underhand chopping, chainsaw carving and then of course, the favorite, log rolling.”

The Lumberjills will be performing up to four 30-minute shows each day at the Barnstable County Fair at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds on Route 151 in East Falmouth.

Scheer grew up in northern Wisconsin in the small town of Hayward, which is the home of Lumberjack World Championships.

“I started log rolling when I was seven years old,” she said. “And my brothers and sisters started log rolling too. We got really good at it and started getting hired to do shows.”

Scheer said they then started to play with axes and cross cuts and decided to build a traveling lumberjack show.

“I worked for my family for 15 years before I decided it was time for me to go off on my own,” she said.

Scheer said two of her brothers also branched out on their own with one owning lumberjack shows in Ketchikan, Alaska and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; and the other owning three shows in Wisconsin.

“We started out as kids and we are all still doing it,” Scheer said.

Scheer said it takes the right kind of woman to join the Chics with Axes.

“I try and find girls that obviously can do the skills pretty well and they have to be fun on the road,” she said. “You don’t want to be stuck on the road with a girl that nobody likes.”

She said the women also have to be able to come to and enjoy fairs and festivals like the Barnstable County Fair.

“For me, what a blast,” she said. “We get to spend the week in Cape Cod and traveling around and meeting people.”

Scheer said her favorite event is the underhand chop and she also enjoys log rolling.

“I can do all of the events,” she said. “Lindsey can chop. Kate and Katie can log roll but they can’t do all of them. So if anything ever happens, I’m happy to jump in and take their place.”

This is the first time Scheer has been on the Cape since she was 14 years old and she said she is looking forward to being a tourist during her time here.

The Barnstable County Fair runs through Sunday with the gates open from 4 to 10 p.m. through Thursday, 12 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 12 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
