HYANNIS – Children’s Cove, the Cape and Islands Child Advocacy Center, will host their 15th annual Champions for Children Conference today and tomorrow.

The conference, which will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Hyannis, will focus on innovative approaches to solving the problems surrounding child sexual abuse.

“The Champions for Children Conference focuses on high level education for child advocates, medical professionals, therapists, social workers, law enforcement and prosecutors,” said Children’s Cove Director Stacy Gallagher.

The conference sells out every year and is regarded as one of the best in the country, she said.

This year’s highlights include keynote speaker Nancy Hunter Denney, who is a leadership trainer and author.

Her speech will focus on caregiver trauma fatigue and methods to combat it.

According to Gallagher, one in four girls and one in six boys will be affected by child sexual abuse by the age of 18.

“This is really an advanced conference so that these professionals can go back to their agencies and have the most up-to-date information to be able to most effectively work these cases,” said Gallagher.

In recent years, the focus has been on peer reviewed case studies that provide detailed accounting of child sexual abuse trends and solution based outcomes.

The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.
