Classic Cars to be Featured Saturday at Heritage Museums & Gardens

SANDWICH – Dozens of classic cars will be on display Saturday at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich.

The museum and the Classic Car Club of America New England Region will host the Grand Classic Event beginning at 10 a.m.

The national car show will feature approximately 40 full classic cars built between 1915 and 1948, including vehicles from Rolls Royce, Packard and Duesenberg.

“They are basically fine automobiles built with a higher quality of materials and have a superior design and engineering over other cars of their era,” said Jon Elmendorf, a manager and board member of the Classic Car Club.

The unique cars will be judged using Classic Car Club of America show standards and will compete for national level awards.

Elmendorf said it is rare to see this many full classic cars together at the same time.

“We have two Duesenberg’s coming that are rarely seen out,” Elmendorf said. “We have a number of Packard’s, a number of Cadillacs, and three Rolls Royce’s that I’m aware of.”

One of the two Duesenberg cars on display is owned by Heritage and will be making its Grand Classic Event debut since being restored in 1964.

“It has never been shown nationally since it was restored over 50 years ago,” Elmendorf said. “This will be its maiden outing to a national show.”

That Duesenberg was originally owned by the actor Gary Cooper.

“It’s painted in a very bright color combination of green and yellow and it’s probably one of my favorite cars,” Elmendorf said.

Many of the cars come from as far away as California of Florida for the show.

Visitors are invited to view the cars and interact with car owners. The event is free with museum admission and runs from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

The Classic Car Club of America was formed in 1953 to establish and honor certain automobiles during the classic ear from 1915 to 1948.
