Friends of Bass River Group Seeks Cleanup Volunteers

YARMOUTH – The Friends of Bass River and the Town of Yarmouth will be holding a sweep of the shores to pick up debris which has been left behind.

Small teams will visit various locations along the river. All are welcome regardless of age or ability.

Aside from being an eyesore, marine debris harm sea life and humans.

Animals can be choked, starved or poisoned when they mistake debris for food and can become entangled in nets, ropes, bags and other trash.

Glass, wood or metal pose a risk to beachgoers who can easily injure themselves.

Sources of the debris include littering, trash blowing out of cans and cigarette butts washing into storm drains that connect to the ocean.

It also poses a threat to navigation such as propellers jammed with fishing line and plastic clogging cooling intakes.

Much of the trash collected each year comes from street litter, most of which can be prevented by secure trash bins and recycling.

The cleanup will take place on November 18th from 10:00-12:00. It will start at Bass River beach in South Yarmouth.

Garbage bags and gloves will be provided.
