Climate Change Forum Planned for Hyannis Tonight

HYANNIS – A community forum will be held Wednesday night in Hyannis to discuss how the changing climate is affecting Cape Cod.

The non-partisan event, sponsored by the Barnstable Democratic Town Committee, will feature a panel of experts to present current information on climate impacts and answer questions from residents.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, is at the Barnstable Senior Center at 7 p.m.

Speakers for the event will be Richard Delaney, the president and CEO of the Center for Coastal Studies; Andrew Gottlieb, the executive director of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod; Jo Ann Muramoto, the director of science programs for the APCC; and Madhavi Venkatesan, an assistant teaching professor of Economics, Northeastern University and executive director of Sustainable Practices.

The panel will be moderated by Barnstable Town Councilor Britt Beedenbender.

“It’s an information packed evening,” said event organizer Sheila Place. “But the goal is not to make people feel it’s hopeless, but to give them something they can do when they walk out of that room.”

Representatives from local environmental organizations will also offer ideas on how individuals can get involved.

“What we would love to see people take away from this is something that they can personally do to help in their own piece of the world to help mitigate climate change,” Place said.
