BARNSTABLE – Hotter weather, more severe storms and more droughts are in the forecast, according to scientists who studied what will happen in Barnstable in the future because of climate change.
The Town of Barnstable held a workshop yesterday to share results from a project that studied how the town will cope with climate change.
The town partnered with the Waquoit National Estuarine Research Reserve, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other entities on the project.
The town of Barnstable’s Growth Management Director Jo Anne Miller-Buntich said the town got involved with the project to start the planning process for how the municipality will deal with climate change.
One finding came in the area of perception. A study of 100 random Barnstable residents showed that they care about climate change and want their town officials to plan for it.
At the end of yesterday’s session, the group brainstormed on how to get more people involved in thinking about how to deal with climate change.
Besides Barnstable, the other towns in the study were Wells, Maine, Dover, New Hampshire and Cranston, Rhode Island.
