PROVINCETOWN — It was a very busy and very lucrative weekend for Hillary Clinton. The Democratic presidential nominee held a series of fundraisers on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and in Provincetown.
By Sunday evening, Clinton had spoken to more than 2,200 campaign donors. But only those who paid to attend know what Clinton said.
Clinton appeared Sunday afternoon with singer Cher at an event at the Pilgrim Monument and Museum in Provincetown. Senator Ed Markey, former Congressman Barney Frank, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and tennis legend Billie Jean King were also in attendance.
The fundraiser was hosted by former Provincetown Banner publisher Alix Ritchie and event planner Bryan Rafanelli. Tickets ranged in cost from $45 to $27,000. The media was not allowed to hear any of Clinton’s remarks.
While President Barack Obama allows reporters traveling with him to witness his opening remarks at fundraisers, Clinton’s current approach keeps things entirely behind closed doors. That means voters are left to guess at what she’s saying to some of her most powerful supporters.
The president’s approach offers at least a limited measure of accountability that some fear may disappear when Clinton or Republican nominee Donald Trump moves into the White House.
