ORLEANS – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is holding a boating safety course for young boaters next week.

The classes will be held from July 9-11 at the Orleans Fire Department and will be open to children 12 and older. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Topics will include state and federal boating laws, recommended and required equipment, handling emergencies, navigating, and paddle craft safety.

Those who complete the course will meet state requirements for 12-15 year olds to obtain a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat without adult supervision. It will also allow for 16 and 17 year olds to operate a personal watercraft.

The cost of the course is $40.

Registration is required by no later than July 6 and class size is limited.
