Coast Guard Commends Steamship Authority Ferry Crew for Heroic Actions

WOODS HOLE – The U.S. Coast Guard recently issued a letter of commendation, recognizing the captain and crew of the SSA ferry M/V Nantucket for heroic actions during the rescue of a fisherman this past summer.

The incident happened on August 30, when a fisherman fell overboard from the fishing vessel Sky Pie, into the waters of Nantucket Sound.

MV Nantucket Captain David Moore answered the distress call, diverting the ferry from its standard course, then launched the ferry’s rescue boat.

Crewmembers were able to haul in the fisherman in a few minutes, then promptly administered first aid.

In the commendation letter, U.S. Coast Guard Richard J. Schultz states “The swift actions, sound judgement, and expert seamanship displayed by the crew of the M/V Nantucket undoubtedly saved a fisherman’s life and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.”
