Coast Guard: Missing Andrea Doria Diver Presumed Dead off Nantucket

coast guard helicopterBOSTON (AP) — A 64-year-old diver who went missing while diving near the Andrea Doria wreck off Nantucket is presumed dead and the Coast Guard has suspended its search.

The Coast Guard says Wednesday crews searched more than 30 hours southeast of Nantucket. The diver’s name was not immediately released.

The crew aboard the commercial diving boat John Jack notified the Coast Guard at 1 p.m. Tuesday that the diver did not resurface. Another diver confirmed being with the missing man at a 20-foot decompression stop then not seeing him after reaching the surface.

The wreckage rests in 240 feet of water. The Italian liner sank in 1956 after colliding with the Swedish liner Stockholm. At least 51 people died.

Seven divers in the area have died since 2005.
