MONOMOY – Coast Guard Station Chatham and Air Station Cape Cod crews rescued a fisherman Tuesday, four miles east of Monomoy Island.

A crewmember aboard a fishing boat called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England for help after a man aboard was experiencing chest pain and in need of immediate medical attention.

A 42-foot response boat crew and an MH-60 helicopter crew responded to help.

The boat crew took the man aboard before he was transported by medevac to Barnstable Airport and to the hospital for medical care.

“The fishing boat’s captain acted quickly, calmly, and made the prudent decision to reach out to the Coast Guard as soon as he recognized a medical emergency developing aboard his vessel,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kelly Zimmerman, who was on the response boat crew. “Safely getting this man to shore and the help he needed was a team effort.”
