Coast Guard Saves Boat off Nantucket

coast guard02NANTUCKET – The Coast Guard helped four fishermen Saturday when their boat started flooding about 25 miles southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The crew aboard the 71-foot fishing vessel Olivia Catherine contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, at 4:50 a.m., when their boat started taking on water.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, launched with two dewatering pumps on board.

Once on scene, the air crew lowered the pumps to the Olivia Catherine, and the crew started dewatering the vessel and heading toward New Bedford, Massachusetts.

To ensure their safety, the Sector Southeastern New England watch crew established a communications schedule with the Olivia Catherine crew as they made their way toward shore.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Menemsha met the Olivia Catherine crew along the way, and escorted them to shore where they were safely moored in New Bedford at about 5:30 p.m.
