Codfather Cohort Sentenced

BOSTON – The co-conspirator of the so called “Codfather,” former fishing magnate Carlos Raphael, has been spared jail time at his sentencing by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper.

46 year old Jamie Melo, of North Dartmouth, will serve one year of probation with the first 8 months on home confinement. Melo was convicted by a federal jury of one count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States and one count of structuring the export of monetary instruments, he was acquitted of one count of bulk cash smuggling.

Melo was part of a scheme where Raphael would smuggle large amounts of cash to Portugal to avoid U.S. Taxes. Prior to a flight with Raphael and others to the Azores in 2015, Melo handed envelopes of cash to his fellow smugglers and records show Raphael deposited $75,000 into his Portuguese Bank account two days later.

At the time Melo was an Administrative Captain with the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office
