Phase 1 is completed at Paul Hush Way in Brewster

BREWSTER – The community gathered Tuesday evening in Brewster to tour and dedicate five recently completed Habitat for Humanity homes.

The five homes completed the six-home first phase of the new Paul Hush Way development.

Homeowners and housing officials thanked the community, donors and volunteers who made the project possible.

Brewster Baptist Church Pastor Doug Scalise said the new homes are only there because of a community effort.

“They are standing here waiting to welcome these families because of the help, because of the support of so many of you and so many other people who can’t be here today,” Scalise said.

Scalise said the new homeowners should also not be forgotten.

“There may still be help and support that we can share,” Scalise said.

The new home buyers, who completed between 250-500 hours of sweat equity building their homes, were also presented with house warming gifts from local organizations, including quilts and bookshelves.

“We just celebrate and have some fellowship,” said Vikki Goldsmith, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod.

The dedicated structures will be the new homes for five families which include seven children between the ages of 2 and 15.

Each home was sold at an affordable price with a deed rider to ensure that upon any future resale, the home will remain affordable.

The first home of the phase was built during a blitz build over a week last September.

Goldsmith said more homes will be added at the development soon.

“We will be back really late next summer to raise walls on eight more homes,” Goldsmith said. “And we will open the applications for those homes very early in 2019.”

There were 80 applications submitted for the first six homes of the development highlighting the need for affordable housing in the region.

The road for the new development was named in memory of Paul Hush, a community leader and longtime local affordable housing advocate.

“I know he would just be so delighted and pleased to see why we are gathered here today,” said Paul Ruchinskas, a member of the Community Preservation Committee in Brewster.

Habitat of Humanity of Cape Cod has developed 127 affordable homes since 1988.

“They are by far and away the most active and productive Habitat in the state,” Ruchinskas said. “We are so lucky to have them here.”
