Community Policing Forum to Be Held at Cape Cod Community College

WEST BARNSTABLE – Law enforcement, the faith community and human rights advocates will gather on Saturday at Cape Cod Community College to address current issues related to community-police relations.

Local police officers, Martin Luther King Action Team members and members of the College’s Criminal Justice Department will attend the event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tilden Center for the Arts.

“People from diverse backgrounds, especially people who have different experiences with the police, are going to have to come together and discuss each other’s realities and see how we can work together to improve the community policing on Cape Cod,” said Rev. Wesley Williams of the MLK Action Team.

The forum includes a panel that is moderated by Brewster Selectman John Dickson, small group discussions and a plenary address by Dr. George Kelling.

Rev. Williams said that the Cape is ahead of the curve when it comes to racial concerns, but that more still needs to be done locally and nationally.

“What we really want to do is establish relationships with the police so that the police see the community or the public as the police, the police and the public are one and we see each other as human beings,” said Rev. Williams.
