EASTHAM – The Cape Cod Commission, along with the Town of Eastham, is hosting a public listening session to hear the thoughts and opinions of residents regarding the implementation of Complete Streets.
These are defined as providing accommodations for all users, including pedestrians, motorists, bicyclists and those with disabilities.
Lev Malakoff, the commission’s Senior Traffic Engineer, said the public input is important to the next step.
“We’re working with the Town of Eastham to help prioritize the various roads that are most important for walking or bicycling. Then we’ll use that information to help get access to funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation,” he said.
The principles for Complete Street planning include safety, environment, connectivity, aesthetics and health.
Malakoff explains that, particularly with the heavy summer traffic, there’s a good chance that they will be popular. “A lot of folks might want to try different options. If we can make that more comfortable and safer, then we’ll hopefully get people out of their cars to use a more healthy way of getting around,” he said.
The listening session will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Eastham Public Library.
