HYANNIS – Congressman Bill Keating announced over $563,000 in grants last week for the Ninth Congressional District from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Fire Fighter Grant Program.

“We all know how critical these firefighter grants are to the safety of our communities, our citizens, and our first responders,” said Keating.

“These recently released grants will provide our fire departments with the necessary programs and protective equipment to continue their service to Cape Cod.”

The grants Include: $156,650.47 for portable and mobile radios for the Barnstable Fire Department: $128,604.54 for safety and survival training for the Barnstable County Fire Training Academy: $50,857.14 for a firefighter wellness and fitness program for the Hyannis Fire Department: $21,320.00 for portable and mobile radios for the Onset Fire Department: $28,515.23 for thermal imaging cameras for the Truro Fire Department: and $177,214.54 for firefighter protective clothing for the Yarmouth Fire Department.

Barnstable County Fire Training Academy Director Bill Burt said they were excited at the opportunity to deliver the International Association of Fire Fighters Fire Ground Survival Training Program to fire fighters across Cape Cod.

“This regional grant award – developed through a partnership between the Hyannis Fire Department and Barnstable County – will bring comprehensive training in Mayday prevention and Mayday operations to help ensure the safety of our local fire fighters,” he said.

“The Hyannis Fire District is thankful to our legislative delegation for their steadfast support of public safety and the fire service,” said Chief Peter Burke.

“These grants will help ensure the safety of our firefighters and in turn the community, while reducing the local tax burden.”
