SANDWICH – Construction is underway to replace the decaying fish ladder and stone walls next to Sandwich Town Hall.

Crews began work on Wednesday. Construction will be done in two phases, shutting down when the weather deteriorates this winter and for the summer tourist season.

The work could result in some limited parking access at times at the town spring.

“It will be hit or miss, but for the most part there will always be access to the spring,” said project engineer Curt Staller.

The project will require the removal of the weeping willow tree, a move that was opposed by some residents in town. The tree will be taken down in early November.

Selectmen voted unanimously to remove the tree. Town officials said that the choice to remove the tree came down to having to fix the fish ladder and preventing any further deterioration.

The structures have not been replaced since the sixties. The project is being paid for with the community preservation act funding.
