Construction Expected to Begin this Summer on New Bourne Police Station

BOURNE – Police officials in Bourne expect construction to begin soon on the new $16.7 million police station.

The facility, which will be built along the bypass road in Buzzards Bay, was approved at Town Meeting and the ballots in the fall of 2016.

Police Chief Dennis Woodside, who is also a member of the Bourne Police Facility Building Committee, said the town is currently accepting bids from contractors to complete the work.

“If all goes as planned we should have at least a shovel in the ground at some point this summer,” Woodside said.

Woodside says the project is a couple of months behind.

“That is not a surprise. That is usual with this type of project,” he said. “Everything seems to be going well. It’s just a lot of things to do.”

The new station could be completed as early as December 2019.

“A lot depends on how things go. You have the winter that could hurt you – things like that,” Woodside said. “We lost some time just with those March storms this year.”

Woodside said the construction timetable could easily change.

The new building will be a modern facility with up-to-date communications and locker rooms that will be asbestos free.

“We are going to have the resources that we need and our officers need to do the job,” he said. “What we have been working in and what we are used to is just not satisfactory in any way.”

The building is expected to satisfy the needs of the town for the next 25 to 30 years and Woodside expects it to last 50 years.

“The population really can’t explode too much more in this town,” he said. “All the land is basically built up and we know where the limits are.”

The building committee decided on not including a vacant second floor for the building that would have added 6,000 square feet of additional space for future use.

The space would have cost an additional $1.3 million.
