Construction Begins Monday on Parkers River Bridge in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH – Road work and construction will begin Monday on the Parker’s River Bridge in Yarmouth.

The Route 28 span is set to be replaced and widened to a new 30 foot wide bridge that will improve tidal flushing, reduce nitrogen loads in the Parker’s River estuary and improve the streetscape.

“It’s actually what’s happening beneath the bridge that’s the most important,” said Yarmouth Town Engineer Amanda Ruggiero.

“Right now, there is an existing 18 foot spanned bridge which is restricting tidal flow. This project will widen that span from 18 feet to 30 feet and it will provide additional flushing for the Parkers River Bridge,” she said.

The new bridge will also reduce infrastructure damage by allowing storm surge to flow more rapidly out of the estuary, improve fish passage, and increase salt marsh growth.

“We’re looking at not only aquatic and terrestrial salt marsh habitat restoration, but also a component of storm flowage,” said Director of Natural Resources Karl von Hone.

The project is set to happen in two major phases. The first phase is the construction of the south side of the bridge which will take place from fall 2019 until spring 2020.

The second phase is the construction of the north side of the bridge and site restoration which will take place starting in fall 2020, and conclude in the spring of 2021.

Utility work will also be ongoing throughout the construction of the bridge.

Both lanes of travel will be open during construction, with work hours consisting of 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The work may potentially cause temporary traffic delays and some of the work will include vibrations.

Pedestrians will be able to walk each side of the bridge during construction with a temporary pedestrian bridge located on the south side.

Police details will be on site or traffic control as needed.

A resident engineer will also be on site at times to ensure the safety and completion of the bridge.

The works is expected to be completed by January 2022.
