Construction to Begin for New Harwich Port Health Center

HARWICH PORT – Outer Cape Health Service has received the go ahead from the Harwich planning board to begin construction on its expansion project.

The medical center at the former Thompson’s Farm Market in Harwich Port will include 16 exam rooms, a pharmacy and a lab.

Outer Cape Health Service CEO Patricia Nadle said bids have been collected and the organization should award a construction contract this week.

“All things are coming together over the next couple of weeks and we look to get a shovel in the ground by the end of this month or the very beginning of April,” said Nadle. “We are so excited that this has become a reality now.”

Contruction is expected to move quickly as the building is well constructed, according to Nadle.

“It’s all inside work,” Nadle said. “It’s just an open palette. It’s a lot of open space. There’s not a lot of demolition they’d have to start.”

The floor will need to be raised and adjustments will need to be made for flood plain requirements.

The organization, which provides a full range of healthcare and supportive social services for residents on the eight outermost towns on the Cape, currently has a five-room facility on Chatham Road.

“We will have the capacity to see quite a few more patients than we currently do,” Nadle said.

The current facility saw 15,000 patient visits last year.
