HARWICH – An affordable housing development in Harwich has been given the go-ahead thanks to narrow vote of the town’s appeals board.
The 3 to 2 vote comes after five months of consideration on the Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod project, calling for the development of an eight-unit subdivision off of Route 28 in West Harwich.
Habitat has negotiated a sales agreement for the land with the Harwich Ecumenical Council for Homeless, which owns the 2.46 acres on which the project would be built.
The project had drawn some public scrutiny for population density, wastewater and septic issues.

“The front portion of the site will be owned by HECH,” Vikki Goldsmith, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity ff CAPE COD, “and they retain the right to sell the front on sort of a market basis, that is how it’s referred to.”
HECH has already made arrangements to sell the property to Noah Thatcher, a private developer.
