FALMOUTH – Falmouth selectmen may have found a piece of land suitable for a senior center, and it’s a turn-key place.

According to Cape Cod Restaurants owner William Zammer, he and the town have entered into discussions regarding a town purchase of the Coonamessett Inn on Gifford Street.

Zammer’s company runs that establishment, along with the Flying Bridge and Red Horse Inn in Falmouth, Tugboats in West Yarmouth and Clancy’s in Dennis Port.

But now Zammer said he feels it is worth letting go of the Coonamessett, a widely-known staple for events and holiday dinners, in favor of it being put to use as a senior center.

He said it would save the town money insofar as the furnishings, septic and power supply is in good working order.

“The buildings are in absolutely great shape, it’s a turn-key operation,” Zammer said.

The town has searched for an appropriate senior center site for over two years, and Zammer said another opportunity such as this is not likely to turn up again.

He said that his run with the building, which he acquired in 1996, has been fulfilling.

Zammer said that even if it is converted into a senior center, there is still space to host events.

His other properties will continue to run as usual, he said.

The board of selectmen will vote at a meeting today whether or not to put a Proposition 2½ override question on the September 8th special election ballot.
