SANDWICH – A proposed project in Sandwich to dredge sand from Scusset Beach north of the Cape Cod Canal to help replenish Town Neck Beach in Sandwich won’t be cheap.
As part of Army Corps of Engineers section 1-11 study into the impacts of the canal jetties, the Woods Hole Group received sand transportation estimates from the Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting Co., of Quincy, and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., of Illinois, that range between $8.5 and $10 million.
“The type of things we are doing are not only big but they are expensive,” said Bud Dunham, the town manager.
If the Corps’ study concludes the jetties have decreased the natural flow of sediment to Town Neck then the federal government would likely cover the costs.
The sand would be used to replenish Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, which has experienced severe erosion in recent years.
“All these options will be spelled out in the 1-11 report with cost estimates and they will have to fund, I think it’s, the least expensive most beneficial repair,” Dunham said.
Dunham said U.S. Senator Ed Markey is working to increase the one-time operation limit from $10 to $15 million.
