COTUIT – The Cotuit Center for the Arts’ Second Wednesday Theater continues tomorrow with a staged reading of “The Shop Around the Corner.”
The free performance, with a screenplay by Samson Raphaelson and directed by Ed O’Toole, is on the main stage at 7:30 p.m.
“The Shop Around the Corner” is a romantic comedy set in Budapest in the 1920s or 30s and is an adaptation of the 1937 Hungarian play “Parfumerie.” A previous film starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan was released in 1940.
Klara Novak charms her way into a job at a shop as the Christmas shopping season begins, but Alfred Kralik, the top salesman finds her annoying. Little does he know that she is a secret pen pal he has been writing to and has fallen for.
The subplot with clever twists nearly results in disaster before Christmas Eve.
The Second Wednesday Theater is a monthly play-reading series of rarely performed classics, undiscovered and new works.
