COTUIT – Residents of the village of Cotuit have been asking for safety improvements for pedestrians for years. After a meeting this week, the village is likely to get them.
Barnstable Town Council President Jessica Rapp-Grassetti represents Cotuit on the town council. She also grew up in the village and said the repairs are a long time coming.
“We’re very limited as to the number of sidewalks we have in the village of Cotuit and some of those are very old and have vegetation encroaching on them, which forces walkers into the street. Our roads are very narrow and have a lot of encroachments,” she said.
A meeting of the Cotuit-Santuit Civic Association this week invited Growth Management division, the town engineers division and Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald to listen to the village concerns.
Rapp-Grassetti said the precinct she represents, Precinct 7, includes not just the center of the village but also Route 28, Santuit-Newtown, and Route 28 near Route 130.
The talk at the meeting focused on speeding at first, she said. Putnam Avenue has the highest speed limit at 35 miles per hour but everyone goes faster and there are a lot of pedestrians, Rapp-Grassetti said.
This is the first of many visioning sessions planned, she said.
