BOSTON (AP) — The Governor’s Council has voted unanimously to confirm the nomination of Frank Gaziano to Massachusetts’ highest court.
Gaziano, currently a Superior Court judge, is one of three nominees by Republican Gov. Charlie Baker to fill upcoming vacancies on the Supreme Judicial Court.
The Council voted 8-0 on Wednesday after several councilors praised Gaziano for his fairness and integrity.
Three councilors acknowledged concerns over Gaziano’s support for the death penalty as a federal prosecutor, but noted it was unlikely that capital punishment would be reinstated in Massachusetts in the near future.
Baker has also nominated Superior Court judges Kimberly Budd and David Lowy to replace SJC justices who are retiring by the end of the summer.
The council has scheduled hearings on those nominations for later this month.
