County Commissioner Cakounes Kicks Off Re-Election Campaign

HARWICH – Barnstable County Commissioner Leo Cakounes officially kicked off his campaign for re-election at the end of last month.

Cakounes is finishing his first term on the board and currently serves as its chairman.

The Harwich Republican is being challenged by Ronald Bergstrom, a Democrat from Chatham and a member of the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates.

Cakounes touted his record as a commissioner, saying he needed an hour to run down his list of accomplishments.

“I’ve done everything I said I was going to do during my first campaign and probably 10 or 15 very, very more important things,” Cakounes said.

“We have straightened out county government. County government for years has been spending their savings account in order to balance the budget. I stopped that process immediately and have brought forward three balanced budget without spending a dime in savings.”

Cakounes also highlighted the county’s newly acquired bond rating from S&P and the decision to hire Jack Yunits as County Administrator as some of his other accomplishments while on the job.

“I’m running against Ron Bergstrom. He and I have completely different policies and procedures on how we think municipal government should operate,” Cakounes said.

Cakounes criticized Bergstrom’s approach to fiscal matters, saying he has not exercised enough restraint when it comes to the county’s monetary savings.

“If Mr. Bergstrom wins I guarantee you the county will revert right back to the same old procedures it was doing in the last 8 years.

Cakounes held the campaign kickoff at his farm in Harwich. He prominently featured one of his cows, Stella, as part of his first campaign for County Commissioner in 2014.

He called the decision to run for re-election an easy one for him but a more difficult one for his family, since the job takes up a large part of his time that would otherwise be spent working on the farm.
