County Officials Consider Relocating Fire Training Academy

BARNSTABLE – Barnstable County officials are looking into the possibility of moving the county’s fire training academy to a location on Joint Base Cape Cod.

Contamination from foam used in training over the years has impacted several Hyannis water wells that became contaminated.

Assistant Town Manager Andy Clyburn has been having discussions with bas officials about the possibility.

“There’s no time table, I would say that I’ve been surprised how quickly discussions have moved forward,” said Clyburn, “The general and Joint Base Cape Cod have a definitive vision of having a first responder training venue there and they had already engaged federal and state partners in that endeavor.”

The topic was discussed at the Barnstable Town Council’s regular meeting earlier this month, with Town Manager Mark Ells suggesting that the base may be a possible location in the future.
