Suspects Connected to Shooting of Falmouth Officers Appear in Court

FALMOUTH – Two people connected to the shooting of two Falmouth police officers appeared in Falmouth District Court Monday.

Marcus Maseda, 18, and Kimberly Koval, 38, allegedly tried to interfere with the officer’s efforts as they followed the shooting suspect, Malik Koval, into a home on Ashley Drive.

Both are charged with obstruction of justice, assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with the duties of a police officer.

Maseda and Kimberly Koval both posted $5,000 bail over the weekend, which was increased by a judge to $7,500 each.

Both were taken into custody pending bail.

The Cape & Island’s District Attorney’s Office asked for $25,000 bail for both defendants.

Malik Koval is accused of shooting the officers as they responded to a disturbance Friday afternoon.

Officer Don DeMiranda was shot in the chest, but the the bullet was stopped by his vest. A second round hit him in the shoulder area. He was in good condition at a local hospital.

Officer Ryan Moore was struck in the neck area causing a grazing wound. He was treated and released Friday night.

“The officers are doing well. One officer that was released, Officer Moore, is home trying to get back to some normalcy, it’s going to take some time. Officer DeMiranda is scheduled today (Monday) for surgery, he’s in a Boston hospital,” said Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne.

Officers encountered the suspect breaking bottles in the street. As they tried to engage him he became agitated, and ran into the home at 2 Ashley Drive.

At some point, Koval produced a gun and allegedly began shooting at the officers. It appears from ballistic evidence that the shots were fired within the house.

Police returned fire striking Koval several times. He was med-flighted to a Boston area hospital where he remains in custody, in stable condition.

“I was clear what the district attorney said happened and I’m pleased they are back in custody,” said Dunne.

During their arraignments, the prosecutor alleged that Maseda and Kimberly Koval both tried to impede officers when the arrived, saying the “both attacked one of the officers.” Both are accused of yelling and interfering with the officers.

But their defense attorney disputed those claims, saying Malik’s mother, Kimberly, actually tried to stop Malik and actually held him down and kicked away a firearm.

The D.A’s office sought to increase their bail to $25,000, while the defense asked that it stay at the $5,000 the two had already posted. Judge Lisa Edmonds increased the bail to $7,500.

Dunne said it’s time to stop the open season on police officers, referring to the shootings of his two officers and the fatal shootings of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon and Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna.
